TORONTO AND NEW YORK (MAY 2, 2024)—The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) today announced the announced the April edition of the SupraStars of the Month, presented by AIRSUPRA® (albuterol/budesonide) Inhalation Aerosol. The award recognizes three forwards, two defenders, and one goaltender at the conclusion of each month, determined as the players who most excelled on ice throughout the PWHL. Forwards are selected regardless of position.
The SupraStars of the Month, presented by AIRSUPRA, for the month of April have been recognized as: Ottawa forward Brianne Jenner; Toronto forward Sarah Nurse; Montréal forward Laura Stacey; Montréal defender Erin Ambrose; New York defender Ella Shelton; Boston goaltender Aerin Frankel
BRIANNE JENNER, F, OTTAWA
Jenner had four goals in four games played in April, second most among all PWHL players for the month. Ottawa’s captain began the month by posting her first-ever PWHL hat trick in a 4-0 win against Minnesota on April 20, matching her season-high point output in a single game. Jenner once again hit the scoresheet in her next contest, notching her ninth tally of the season in a 3-2 shootout victory over Boston – a team Ottawa is battling for the final playoff positions. Through four games in the month, the Oakville, ON native had 16 shots on goal while winning 54.5% of her face-offs. By month’s end, Jenner was fifth in league scoring with 19 points (9G, 10A) in 23 games played.
SARAH NURSE, F, TORONTO
Nurse led all PWHL skaters in goals in April, with five in three games played. The forward put up back-to-back multi-goal games, starting with two against Montréal at the Bell Centre on April 20, which included the overtime winner— her second OT winner of the season. Nurse followed up her heroics in Montréal by posting her first-ever PWHL hat trick, leading Toronto to a 6-2 victory against New York on April 28, as her team continued their quest for first overall in the PWHL standings. Thanks to her goal output in the month, the 29-year-old moved into a tie for second in the PWHL, and now has ten on the season. By month’s end, Nurse sat fourth in league scoring with 20 points (10G, 10A) in 22 games played.
LAURA STACEY, F, MONTRÉAL
Stacey finished second in league scoring in March, with six points in four games played. She tallied three goals in the month, which brought her season total to ten— good for a tie for second place in the PWHL. The 29-year-old recorded at least a point in every game played in April, as Montréal earned regulation wins in three of four games. Stacey started off her month with a season-high three-point game on April 18 against Minnesota, as she collected a goal and two assists in a 4-3 comeback win for her squad. She ended April by notching the game-winning goal on April 27 against Ottawa, helping her team clinch second overall in the PWHL standings heading into the playoffs. Through four games, Stacey had 18 shots on goal while averaging more than 20 minutes a game. She now sits tied for ninth in league scoring with 17 points (10G, 7A) in 22 games played.
ERIN AMBROSE, D, MONTRÉAL
Ambrose not only led all PWHL defenders in scoring in April — she led all skaters, putting up seven points (1G, 6A) in four games played. The Montréal blue-liner began her month by making history as the first-ever PWHL player to record four points in a single-game, notching four assists against Minnesota on April 18. Ambrose was in on every Montréal goal in the game, including assisting on two goals in the final three minutes of the third period as her team completed a 4-3 comeback win in regulation. In her team’s next game — the record-breaking Duel at the Top at the Bell Centre in Montréal on April 20 — Ambrose scored a powerplay goal in front of 21,105 fans to tie the game 2-2 late in the second period. Of her seven points in the month, six were scored on the powerplay, as Ambrose quarterbacked her team on the advantage. In April, Ambrose averaged more than 27 minutes a game and added 11 shots on goal. The defender finished April sitting at 17 points (4G, 13A) in 23 games, good for second among defenders and eighth overall.
ELLA SHELTON, D, NEW YORK
Shelton had five points (2G, 3A) in four games played in April, second-most among all PWHL defenders and third overall across the league for the month. The 26-year-old had points in three of four games in April and averaged more than 27 minutes a game. Shelton — who scored the PWHL’s first-ever goal on January 1 — found the back of the net twice for her team in the month, both on a breakaway, a rare occurrence for a defender. The Ingersoll, ON native capped off her month by recording three points against Ottawa on April 30, which tied her season-high single-game output. Shelton finished April sitting as the scoring leader among PWHL defenders with 18 points (6G, 12A) through 23 games played, good for sixth overall in league scoring.
AERIN FRANKEL, G, BOSTON
Frankel started three games in April, winning twice and falling once in a shootout. With Boston battling for a playoff position, Frankel put up a .945 save percentage and 1.30 goals-against average, backstopping her team to seven key points in the standings. The 24-year-old started the month by standing tall against the PWHL’s first place team, as Boston won 2-1 against Toronto in regulation. In her next start, Frankel again only allowed one goal, stopping 25 shots on the way to another 2-1 regulation victory. With the two victories in April, the native of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. ended the month sitting third in wins with seven. She also sits second in both goals-against-average (1.98) and save percentage (.930%) in 17 games played.
